SENATE PASSES SEXUAL HARASSMENT OF STUDENTS BILLS FOR SECOND READING

 
The Senate on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 passed for second reading two legislation. The Bills whose general principles were debated and passed by distinguished Senators include:
1) A Bill for an Act to provide for the establishment of National Transport Commission as an Independent Multi-Modal Economic Regulator for the Transport Industry and for other related matters, 2016, (S.B. 242) sponsored by Sen. Andy Uba (Amambra South). The legislation, having enjoyed the support of the law-makers sailed through second reading and has been referred to the Senate Joint Committee Aviation, Land and Marine Transport to report back in four weeks.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki congratulated the sponsor of the Bill stating that it is one of the priority Bills of the Senate aimed at fast tracking the transformation agenda of the present administration. He urged the Joint Committee in which the Bill was referred to do a thorough work on the legislation to ensure its early passage and speed up the Change mantra of the Buhari Administration.
2) A Bill for an Act to make provision for the prohibition of Sexual Harassment of Students by Educators in Tertiary Institutions and for
other related matters, 2016 (S.B. 262), sponsored by Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege (Delta Central and 57 others. The Bill also got the nod of distinguished Senators and scaled through second reading and has been referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to report back in four weeks.

The Senate President thanked the sponsor of the Bill; stated that it is time we stamp out and rid the nation of sexual harassment especially in Institutions of Higher Learning. He urged his colleagues to ensure stiffer penalty for offenders which would make life very difficult for them.

Similarly, the Red Chamber has considered, adopted and passed the Report of its Ad-hoc Committee on Import Duty Waiver, Concession and Grants on the indiscriminate use and abuse Import Duty Waivers. The Report was presented for Consideration by the Committee Chairman, Sen. Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central). The Upper Legislative Chamber adopted and passed more than twenty recommendations of the Committee. 

Also, the Senate has considered and passed the Report of its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters in respect of a Motion on the Differences in the Content of Section 18 of the Armed Forces Act CAP. A20 LFN 2004 and 2010 respectively. The Hallowed Chamber reviewed and passed the three clauses of the Section 18 of the Act and urged the Attorney General of the Federation to take step of withdrawing the affected section of the Act still in circulation. The Report was presented by the Chairman of the Committee, Sen. David Umaru (Niger East).
