A bill to strip of any person honoured with the Nigeria National Merit
Award (NNMA) but subsequently found wanting of any crime against Nigeria
law by court of any competent jurisdiction has passed for second reading
in the House of Representatives.
The bill seeks to amend the National Award Act of 1982, No.96 which set orders and decorations conferred upon Nigerians and friends every year.
Ayodele Oladimeji, sponsor of the bill said, the amendment is very
germane for the promotion of excellence by giving recognition to those
who had contributed to development and progress of the country in the
field of endeavors.
He also emphasized the objectives of the amendment; that in view of the
current developments in our economic and political life, the law
requires an amendment.
Further speaking, Oladimeji said, "the bill will strengthen the federal
government aims and objectives in fighting corruption in all fields of
life through the introduction of section 8 (2) to the principal Act
which provides: Any Awardee convicted of any criminal offence shall be
stripped of the National Honour", he stated.
Contributing to the debate, Adamu Kamale from Adamawa, while supporting
to the amendment said it would make the recipients of such awards
live up to expectation.
The bill passed second reading after Yakubu Dogara, the speaker put it to a voice vote with the "ayes" having it.
