Human rights activists in Rivers state have called on the leadership of the Rivers state House of Assembly and indeed the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to eschew the politics of bitterness by swearing in Hon Victoria Nyeche who represents Port Harcourt constituency I in the state Assembly.
Victoria Nyeshe was re-elected by the people of PHALGA I on the platform of the All progressives Congress, (APC) but has not been sworn in alongside with her colleagues more than one year after the 2015 general election.
It will be recalled that the Appeal Court in Abuja had issued an order to the independent national electoral commission, (INEC) to issue her a certificate of return which the electoral body obliged with.
Unfortunately, the leadership of the Rivers state House of Assembly has consistently flouted the order of the court to swear in the lawmaker to join her colleagues in the House for the legislative business.
It will be recalled that one Livingstone Nyeshe had dragged Hon Victoria to court on the allegation that she used the letter headed paper of the Assembly to write a personal letter when she was yet to be sworn in as a lawmaker.
Though the case is yet to be decided in court, a social justice crusader, Comrade Christian Lekia has called on the Assembly to consider the plight of Hon Victoria Nyeshe’s constituents who have been denied the dividends of democracy since their representative has been denied access to the House.
“For the sake of the people who voted this woman to bring succor to them, she must be sworn in to join her colleagues in the House. The people of PHALGA cannot be denied their right of enjoying good governance. Not swearing her in will amount to democratic injustice in PHALGA constituency 1.
“Democracy is about the interest of the people. Therefore, shutting her out of the Assembly will amount to a murder of democracy and promotion of impunity.
“There is no democracy that is healthy without a vibrant opposition. The voice of the opposition must be heard because we are running a one party state. Politics of bitterness must be removed from our system. As right activists, I urge the appropriate authorities to commence the process of swearing in Hon Victoria Nyeshe”, Lekia said.
He called on the well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on the House of Assembly leadership to immediately clear the woman for active participation in democratic debate on the floor of the Rivers state House of Assembly.
