The resolution was reached sequel to a motion sponsored by Rep. Yusuf Tajudeen, APC- Kogi.

The lawmaker while presenting the motion, observed that commercial banks charge costumer N65 for every single cash withdrawals made on Automated Teller Machines domiciled in other banks.

He further said, " This illegal charges from every cash withdrawal is an indirect  measure applied by Banks to short- change customers who use other banks Automated Teller Machines.

"This illegal ATM charges by banks is in flagrant abuse of the Central Bank of Nigeria directive that the  N65 deduction starts to apply from the 4th transaction/ withdrawal at other banks ATM in a month."

Tajudeen also said that banks do not comply with the CBN directives which makes the first three withdrawals/transaction in other banks ATM free.

According to the lawmaker, due to poor networking facility driving the transmission backbone of the ATM data which leads to constant system glitches, many customers oftentimes do withdrawals in machines belonging to other banks.

He said the Central Bank of Nigeria being the regulatory body of banks has not taken any reasonable and punitive measure "to sanction banks engaged in this sharp and illegal practice of N65 deduction from customers."

Tajudeen further noted: " The docile approach of Central Bank of Nigeria to its regulatory responsibilities if allowed to continue will give banks the courage to embark on other spurious charges, which will grossly affect customers."

Some lawmakers who spoke in favour of the motion also called on CBN to do the needful by sanctioning commercial banks that have defaulted.

The motion was adopted by a voice vote and sent to the committee on Banking and currency for further legislative action.
