The State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling for immediate intervention of the federal and delta state governments to the plight of victims of this year's flood disaster in Burutu and Bomadi local government areas.

The resolution followed a motion to that effect, brought under matters of urgent public importance by the Member Representing Burutu 1 Constituency, Hon Daniel Yingi during the plenary of the house.

The house in the resolution called on governor, Ifeanyi Okowa to direct the Commissioner, Bureau for Special Duties, the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA and other relevant Agencies to provide relief materials to the victims to cushion the effects of the disaster which swept over seventy communities in Burutu alone.

The motion was amended by the deputy majority leader, Hon Oboro Preyor to include the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA in the intervention exercise as well as adding affected communities in Patani and Warri South West in the relief packages.

Leading debate on the motion, Hon Yingi said several communities in Burutu local government area has been submerged by flooding and their means of livelihood, including fishing and farming greatly affected.

Hon Yingi who is the Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Oil and Gas, said the people no longer go for fishing as fishing ponds, farmlands and economic trees and crops were destroyed by the massive flooding caused by overflow of the Rivers in the areas.

The lawmaker named the affected communities in Burutu to include Gbekebor, Ayakoromo, Okrika, Obotebe, Okpkunou, Ekodor, Forcados, Tuomo, Tamigbe, Kpakiema, Ogbeyama, Ezebri, Ogodobri, Ogbobaigbene among others.

He stressed that the motion was necessary to alleviate the difficulties now faced by the people, appealing to both the federal and delta state governments to urgently send relief materials to the victims.

In their contributions, Hon Timi Tonye, Patani, Kennedy Daubry, Burutu two and Oboro Preyor, Bomadi, said the National Metrological Agency, NIMET, had predicted that communities in the river bank and flood plains would be affected by the 2016 flooding.

The  lawmakers emphasized the need for urgent relief materials to the victims to mitigate the effects of the ravaging flood in the affected communities.


The motion was unanimously adopted when put to voice vote by the Speaker, Rt Hon Monday Igbuya.

Also at plenary, three bills passed first readings.

They include "a bill for a law to provide for the establishment of Delta State Schools of Nursing and Midwifery", presented by the house majority leader, Hon Tim Owhefere, " a bill for a law to Establish the Delta State Consumer Protection Agency " being sponsored by the member representing Okpe in the house, Hon Sheriff Oboriowori and nine others and "a bill for a law to provide for the Regulation of Smoking in Public Places in Delta State " with Hon Evans Iwhurie, Ethiope East as sole sponsor.

Their second readings have been slated for Tuesday October 25, Wednesday October 26 and Tuesday November 15 2016 respectively.
