The House of Representatives committee on Diaspora has adopted a motion
to investigate the extortion of Nigerians living in foreign countries.
This move followed a petition by Seidu Franklyn, a Nigerian from Edo
state who is currently resident in Ghana where he does business.
He alleged that Ghanaian authority asked Nigerians living in Ghana to pay
one hundred and twenty dollars to secure identification card.
This means that even those with valid form of identification as Economic
of West African States (ECOWAS) passports are not spared.
Another issue that the committee frowned at is Nigerian students in
Ghana been asked to pay their school fees in dollars instead of Ghana
currency.
Mr.Frankly also alleged that one of the conditions for doing
business in Ghana is that you must have one million dollars as balance
in your account.
After the petitioner made his submission to the committee, the chairman,
Committee on Diaspora assured him that they would investigate the
matter.
The committee promised to conduct a public hearing and to invite all
relevant stakeholders. They also said they shall look into related
issues and they enjoin all Nigerians with similar experiences to come
forward.
The chairman in her closing remark reiterated the committee's commitment in serving Nigeria with all sincerity of purpose.
