The Member representing Osun at the federal House of Representatives, Prof.Hon. Mojeed Alabi has called on his colleagues in the house and senate to reconsider bills seeking to establish additional agencies.

Prof. Alabi raised the issue on Thursday, 27 October, 2016 on the floor of the house during a consideration of report of some bills by committee of the whole.

The lawmaker raised a point of order on matters of privileges just as the house passed the bill on 'Cancer Treatment Centre' which was sent by the senate for concurrence.

He further stressed that creating additional agencies such as the bill suggest is adding additional burden on the federal government.

According to him, "one of the manifesto of this administration is to cut cost and we  already have so many bills calling for the establishment of agencies".

"I don't have a problem with establishing a cancer treatment centre but why not merge it with the bill seeking to establish cancer research institute", he questioned.

Whilst contributing to the issue, the Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila agreed with Prof. Alabi that there is need for the parliament to assist the executive so as to come up with solutions on cutting down the cost of governance.

Although, he said the creation of cancer treatment centre is also pertinent.

The Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun who presided over the committee of the whole also gave his node to the suggestion of Alabi.

Lasun said the house will be glad if Prof. Alabi can proffer solutions on how some of the existing agencies can merge with others.

However, Alabi suggested that the house should have a committee of experts and likewise the senate in order to harmonize some of the bills with similar functions.

He also added that Nigerians should stop judging the legislature by the number of bills and resolutions its passed but they should be concerned with the implementation.

"It is unfortunate that the assessment of a legislature is still based on the number of bills and resolutions passed without considering if  they are properly drafted".

"We are also producing so many bills and motions but are they implementable", he asked.
