The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki has restated the National
Assembly’s commitment to resolving the country’s economic challenges
through relevant legislation. He said that the National Assembly is
working assiduously to ensure that critical and fundamental legislation
that would get Nigeria out of the current economic recession are passed
without delay.
Dr. Saraki made this declaration
to the visiting delegation of the European Union to Nigeria’s National
Assembly. Saraki, according to the statement issued by his Special
Assistant on Print Media, Chucks Okocha, told the EU delegation on
Democracy Support an Election Coordination Group, led by a member of the
EU Parliament, Mr. Santiago Fisas, that the legislators know that,
without good economy that can sustain improved standard of living of the
ordinary citizens, the legislature would not be seen to have succeeded.
Dr.
Saraki used the opportunity of the visit to commend the EU Parliament
for the critical role it played in monitoring the 2015 general elections
in Nigeria, which he said, has set a new standards for other African
countries to emulate.
The EU delegation had
earlier paid similar visits to the Speaker, House of Representatives
Yakubu Dogara, Chairmen of critical committees of both the Senate and
the House of Representatives, the Clerk To the National Assembly and the
Director General National Institute for Legislative Studies, where the
issues of areas of collaboration and support by the Group were
extensively discussed.
The delegation, under the
aegis of Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group (DEG) of the
European Union are in the country to support Nigeria’s Parliamentary
democracy, and also ascertain areas of collaboration with the National
Assembly.
It is important to note that part of
the DEG’s agenda is to lend support to democracies. This includes,
areas of strengthening parliamentary capacity, independence, national
electoral process and increase public confidence in democratic
governance.
The Nigerian National Assembly was selected by the
EU Parliament as one of the priority and strategic partners of the EU
Parliament Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group (DEG) in
Africa in December, last year, having met all the criteria and
eligibility requirements.
The delegation concluded these strategic meetings with the Senate President on Tuesday, 7th February, 2017.
