The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki has restated the National Assembly’s commitment to resolving the country’s economic challenges through relevant legislation. He said that the National Assembly is working assiduously to ensure that critical and fundamental legislation that would get Nigeria out of the current economic recession are passed without delay.

Dr. Saraki made this declaration to the visiting delegation of the European Union to Nigeria’s National Assembly. Saraki, according to the statement issued by his Special Assistant on Print Media, Chucks Okocha, told the EU delegation on Democracy Support an Election Coordination Group, led by a member of the EU Parliament, Mr. Santiago Fisas, that the legislators know that, without good economy that can sustain improved standard of living of the ordinary citizens, the legislature would not be seen to have succeeded.

Dr. Saraki used the opportunity of the visit to commend the EU Parliament for the critical role it played in monitoring the 2015 general elections in Nigeria, which he said, has set a new standards for other African countries to emulate.

The EU delegation had earlier paid similar visits to the Speaker, House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara, Chairmen of critical committees of both the Senate and the House of Representatives, the Clerk To the National Assembly and the Director General National Institute for Legislative Studies, where the issues of areas of collaboration and support by the Group were extensively discussed.

The delegation, under the aegis of Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group (DEG) of the European Union are in the country to support Nigeria’s Parliamentary democracy, and also ascertain areas of collaboration with the National Assembly.

It is important to note that part of the DEG’s agenda is to lend support to democracies. This includes, areas of strengthening parliamentary capacity, independence, national electoral process and increase public confidence in democratic governance.
The Nigerian National Assembly was selected by the EU Parliament as one of the priority and strategic partners of the EU Parliament Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group (DEG) in Africa in December, last year, having met all the criteria and eligibility requirements.

The delegation concluded these strategic meetings with the Senate President on Tuesday, 7th February, 2017.
