HOUSE MOVES TO STRENGTHEN SAFETY MEASURES IN THE AVIATION SECTOR

The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Aviation to investigate the regulatory agencies in the country's aviation industry including the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) with a view to ascertaining the extent of their compliance with their statutory responsibilities of ensuring the worthiness of aircrafts operating within the nation's airspace. The resolution was passed on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 following a motion moved by Hon. Sergius Ose Ogun. He called for the regulatory authorities to conduct routine checks on the state of aircrafts and to ensure regular update of the weather conditions to forestall scheduling flights where air transportation is unsafe.

He stated that despite the establishment of these regulatory agencies, the frequency of air crashes in Nigeria is worrisome; adding that ascertaining worthiness of aircrafts will help immensely to minimize air crashes as well as improve the ratings of the Nigerian Aviation sector globally.

In another motion, the House mandated the Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to urgently ensure that all abandoned projects in the region are completed by including those projects in the 2016 NDDC Budget. The motion which was at the instance of Hon. Patrick Aisowieren stated that one of the core responsibilities of the Commission is to address infrastructural deficit as well as embarking on projects aimed at improving the lots of the people. He informed that several of such well-meaning projects have been abandoned by their contractors, reiterating that all efforts by the affected communities to interface with either the contractors or NDDC have proved futile. He called on the House to come to the rescue of the people of the area by intervening on the matter.

Meanwhile, the House has received and adopted the report of the Ad hoc Committee on Deregulation of Petroleum Downstream Sector laid before it by the chairman of the Committee, Hon. Alhassan Ado Doguwa. As recommended by the Committee, the House supports the position of the Federal Government in deregulating the downstream sector, however urged the FG to make adequate provision of palliatives to cushion the suffering of the people.
