The Upper Legislative Chamber on Tuesday, May 3, 2016
deliberated upon and passed for second reading two Bills. The general
principles of the Bills were exhaustively debated by distinguished
Senators. The session which was presided over by the Senate President,
Bukola Saraki had the following legislation progress to the next
legislative stage:
1) A
Bill for an Act to Provide for Measures to address Climate Change with a
view to assisting to achieve a sustainable future for the country; to
set targets to achieve a reduction in greenhouse gas emission within
Nigeria to promote the use of renewal source of energy ; to promote
business and community understanding about issue surrounding climate
change; to facilitate early development of policies and programmes to
address climate change; and for other purposes, 2016 (S.B. 108),
sponsored by Sen. Isah H. Misau (Bauchi Central). The Bill, having
scaled through second reading on the floor of the Red Chamber has been
referred to the Senate Committee on Environment and Climate Change to
report back in four weeks.
2) A
Bill for an Act to make provisions for freedom from Hunger and the
Right to Adequate Food of Acceptance Quality; the Right of Every Child
to Basic Nutrition and for Connected Purposes, 2016 (S.B. 71), sponsored
by Sen. Theodore A. Orji (Abia Central).
The
following distinguished Senators contributed in favour of the Bill; Sen.
Jonah Jang, Sen. Adamu Aliero, Sen. Joshua Lidani, Sen. Bala Ibn
Na’Allah, Sen. Umaru Kurfi, Sen. Buhari Abdulfatai and the Senate
President, Bukola Saraki.
Sen. Saraki noted
that the sustenance of hunger in Nigeria cannot be tolerated, as such,
it is imperative for government at all levels come up with sound and
sustainable agricultural policies that would ensure adequate food
security for the country. The Bill sailed through second reading when it
was placed on voice vote before the Hallowed Chamber by the Senate
President. It has been referred to the Senate Committee on Agriculture
and Rural Development for further legislative inputs, to report back in
four weeks.
