One year Anniversary, Speaker Igbuya Speaks.


Events to mark the first anniversary of the Sixth Assembly of the Delta State House of Assembly commenced Wednesday in the state capital with the Speaker, Rt Hon Monday Igbuya reviewing the activities of the house in the last one year.

At a well attended press conference held at the Delta State House of Assembly complex in Asaba, Hon Igbuya disclosed that a total of twenty three bills were received, stating that of the number ten have been passed, while others are at various stages of legislative actions.

The Speaker, flanked by other members of the House, also disclosed the receipt and approvals of thirty five motions during the period under review.

The Speaker, Rt Hon Monday Igbuya said eighteen reports we're received and adopted, while a number of other issues are before different committees for consideration.

He said of the ten passed bills, four have been assented to by the state governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, while four have been forwarded to him for assent.

Hon Igbuya stated that the primary assignment of the house is to project the will of the various constituencies and to make laws that would engender good governance.

He noted that the house was conscious of the yearnings of Deltans for quick delivery of the dividends of democracy, but pointed out that the dwindling oil revenue has impacted negatively on the economy and has consequently limited the capacity of government to meet basic commitments.

The Speaker however assured that the house would remain committed to giving the best representation to the people, attributing the modest achievement of the house in the last one year to the support of every stakeholders.

He commended governor Ifeanyi Okowa for his unwavering support of the state legislature, assuring that the house would sustain the existing cordial working relationship with the executive arm of government.

Not forgetting the role of the house in the sanitization of the local government system, Hon Igbuya stated that in the light of great insecurity and evidence of financial fraud, occasioned by flagrant disregard for constituted authorities, the Assembly investigated former Chairman of Uvwie local government council and relieved of the duty on grounds of financial recklessness, fraud and diversion of funds.

He said exercise was carried out on the Chairman of Ndokwa East but was recalled after the investigation into the issues raised against her, affirming that in the state legislature, the will of the people were speedily attended to.

The Speaker promised that in the second year of the sixth Assembly, the house will focus on issues that will move the state closer to the dreams and aspirations of the founding fathers of the state.
