The House of Representatives has urged the executive arm to as a matter
of urgency acquire and install Instrument Landing Systems in all federal
airports to ensure safety.
The House said the equipment would also enable airlines and airports to
continue operations under very low visible conditions such as heavy
rain, very low cloud or harmattan haze and at night.
The sponsor of the motion Rep Igariwey Iduma Enwo (PDP, Ebonyi), said
most airline owners are operating their aircrafts at half of their
capacities due to absence of requisite Instrument Landing Systems at
most airports.
The House said apart from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport
Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, "all the
other airports in Nigeria cannot function beyond 6:30.pm as they are usually shut down due to absence of ILS."
In the last one month, the House said, "more than 80 percent of flights
were cancelled and those that flew did so at grave risks to passengers
due to poor visibility."
The House further mandated its committee on aviation to ensure
implementation of the resolution and report back within six weeks for
further legislative input.
