The House of Representatives rejected a suggestion by its colleague to
reintroduce toll collection on federal roads to enhance road maintenance
and construction.
Majority of Members opposed the motion with the claim that it is anti
masses and would rather add on the hardship the people are already
experiencing.
According to Ayo Omidiran, " I can not stay here and allow my people to
be subjected into additional hardship. The economic recession we are in
today is directly having a toll on my people", she submitted.
Abdul Sani who also spoke against the motion said roads were not any
better even when tollgates existed so what difference will it make now
if reintroduced, he questioned.
Speaking further, he said tolls are collected on roads when they are already fixed and not the dilapidated ones we have now.
The mover of the motion, Francis Uduyok said tollgates reintroduction
would assist the federal government to realize fund to enable it meet
up with maintenance and construction.
He also notes that the fluctuation in oil prices no longer makes the
current policy dependable and invariably makes the government unable to
catch up with demand of continuous road maintenance.
Kingsley Chinda raised a constitutional point of order requesting the
House to stop further debate on the motion hence the law has not been
reviewed since it was esponged.
When the question was put whether the motion should be retained or thrown away, the 'nay' obviously had their way.
