The House of Representatives has urged the Nigerian authorities to beef
up security in two boundary communities between Akwa Ibom and Cross
Rivers to forestall further loss of lives and property.
House also urged National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to send relief materials to the affected communities.
This followed a motion by Rep. Henry Archibong representing Itu/Ibiono Ibom federal constituency of Akwa Ibom state.
Moving the motion Rep. Archibong noted that there had been crises
between the Ibibio ethnic group in Itu Local Government Area (LGA) of
Akwa Ibom and the Efiks in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River
states since the 70s and 80s.
Archibong further explained that the inter-communal conflict between the
two communities had resulted in loss of lives and destruction of
properties worth millions of naira.
Worried that on the 17 December, 2016, armed men with sophisticated
weapons, chanting war songs and shooting sporadically on the people of
Oku Iboku ,and its environs where 38 persons were killed.
The lawmaker called for immediate intervention by security agencies
hence social and economic activities in the affected communities have
been paralyzed.
The motion was unanimously adopted and referred to the committee on
Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), Initiatives on North East to ensure
resettlement of the displaced persons in the area.
